Park Athletic Fields and Tennis
— Courts
CITY or MOUNTAIN VIEW
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Google regarding
permitted use of GARField Park athletic fields and tennis courts on the weekends for a
trial basis.
BACKGROUND
On June 5, 2012, the City received a letter from Google proposing public use of Google
Athletic Recreation Field (GARField) on the weekends. After discussions with Google
regarding specifics of the proposed use, both parties agreed that limited weekend use of
the athletic fields by permitted Youth Sports Organizations (YSOs) and tennis courts by
the Mountain View Tennis Club for USTA matches would be the best way to
initiate/test public use of the site and observe this use on a trial basis. The addition of
athletic fields will be welcomed by the YSOs and the addition of new tennis courts that
can be permitted for use by the Recreation Division assist with the demand for
reservation tennis courts for USTA matches.
ANALYSIS
An agreement with Google for use of GARField athletic fields and tennis courts on the
weekends would include the following deal points:
• The agreement will be for a trial period beginning October 1, 2012, and ending
February 28, 2014.
• Weekend is defined as Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the
fall/winter and 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the spring/summer.

• Google will unlock the main gate at GARField driveway for permitted access by
8:00 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and lock the gate both Saturday and Sunday
at 6:00 p.m. in the fall/winter and 8:00 p.m. in the spring/summer.
• Public parking will be allowed at Google's 2000 Charleston Road building across
from GARField on Saturdays and Sundays. The City is not responsible for any
damage to the parking area.
• The City may issue permits to YSOs for the soccer field and turf playfield and
permits to the Mountain View Tennis Club USIA tennis matches for the tennis
courts.
• Google will lock up recreation equipment used by Google employees on Friday
evening of each week. The City is not responsible for any equipment left out that
is lost or stolen.
• The City is not responsible for any damage to the facility.
• The hold harmless waiver signed by the YSOs for the field rental permits and the
Mountain View Tennis Club for tennis court rental permits will list the City and
Google.
• Google will name the City as additional insured.
• Google will provide all maintenance to the site, including, but not limited to,
removal of trash and rest room cleaning on Saturday and Sunday.
• Google will notify the City of any special events which would prevent permitted
use of the site at least 30 days in advance of the event.
• Google may close the field without 30-day advance notice due to weather, risk of
damage to field, emergency maintenance or safety of persons.
• Should Google end the trial period prior to February 28, 2014, Google must honor
existing use permits issued by the City to accommodate the league play seasons
which have been permitted by the City.
• During the trial period the City will not issue permits for the next season (winter,
spring, fall) without receiving written approval from Google to move forward with
the use.
